Before you fall in love with a specific model, look closely at your living room’s layout. An exterior wall or existing chimney opens up gas and wood options; interior walls, condos and apartments usually point to electric or water vapour.

Larger rooms and higher ceilings generally suit linear or built-in formats, while smaller rooms suit compact or wall-mount units. Style and budget narrow things further from there.

Our recommendation: choose the fireplace before framing the wall. Small dimensional differences can change the entire design.
